Oscar Reaction

So Oscar Night is by far my favourite night of the year.  Despite this, I usually despise everything ‘Academy’ due to the nominees and winners.  This year, however, I was thrilled with 97% of nominations, so I knew I’d end up a happy man regardless of the eventual winners.  It was probably my worst year ever for Oscar picks, but that may be because the obvious horrific Academy picks weren’t represented.  The exceptions to this rule were the Best Documentary, which were all just so hideously trite and obvious that there was no point paying attention to it, and the nominations for Best Song for its inclusion of 3 songs from “Enchanted”, all of which proved to be painfully nauseating.

I’m not going to delve into most of the winners, other than I was thrilled for the Coen Brothers, and for Juno getting the Original Screenplay nod.  I do want to focus on one winner though, and thankfully in a category that I was annoyed about.  The winners of Best Original Song were Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova for “Falling Slowly” from their movie, “Once”.  I’ve been singing the praises of this movie since I watched it in its opening week – a stunning low-budget movie with one of the best soundtracks in recent memory.  If you haven’t managed to see this yet, go out and buy the movie, or if you happen to know Anonymoushottie, I know she owns the DVD as it was one of her Xmas gifts from us, so I’m sure she’d be happy to lend it to you.  And maybe you can persuade her to watch it at some point.

As an added bonus, Glen and Marketa are starting a tour as ‘The Swell Season’, so if you get the opportunity to see them in your city, jump at the chance because these guys are quite special.

And so another Oscar year is over, and this is the first in recent memory that hasn’t had me screaming at my TV, so thank-you Academy for finally satiating my movie needs with your picks.  And here’s to an exciting ‘celluloid’ year ahead of us.

  1. I can second pretty much all of your comments. One thing that actually did have me screaming at my TV, as you put it, was the fact that “Persepolis” got passed over and the Oscar went to Pixar. Again!

It really was a strong year in movies, though, and I wouldn’t want to have had the privilege of being an Academy member this year. In all honesty, I couldn’t have picked a winner in many categories.

  2. I would agree with you on Persepolis, Eardrummer, especially as Ratatouille was by far one of Pixar’s weakest movies to date. I also mentioned the drivel in the Best Documentary category, which did have me seething when the nominations were announced – how “The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters” was overlooked for a nomination, I will never know. Same goes for “4 Months, 3 Weeks, & 2 Days” in the Best Foreign Film category’. Overall though, a good year for Mr. Oscar, oh, and I was thrilled that they let Marketa back on stage to give her acceptance speech for Best Song.
